While technologists and researchers are excited by the possibilities inherent in future generations of telecoms, business leaders are cautious about more demands for up-front investment and uncertain gains. We need new economic and commercial models to ensure the industry thrives; models which don’t wait for 6G but which will enable companies to make the most of new capabilities as they emerge.
To enable this, we need to build a fresh dynamic in telecoms; closer collaboration between technical and commercial leaders to enable a shared understanding of where value may lie in the next generation, what customers in the public sector, enterprises and consumers need and how to deliver those requirements. This generational change is something that goes far beyond pure technology but can and should involve policymakers and regulators; business decision-makers; and operational systems.
6GSymposium comes at a vital time in the development of telecoms. There are drastically different visions for what 6G needs to do and to be, and interests pulling stakeholders in many different directions.
How do we avoid the mistakes of the past? Only by a deliberate evolution of mindsets, business relations, strategies and industry processes alongside technology and policy evolution. Perhaps then we can build commercially successful future services which deliver the societal impact governments need.
Join us in debate about some of the most important issues and controversies facing telecoms’ development.
What to expect:
The USA has signalled its intention to take a lead in 6G with provisions in, among others, the $280bn CHIPS and Science act. While some of the technology directions for 6G are becoming clearer, reaching those aspirations through the 2020s will be demanding.
Building sound commercial models for 6G and its related services is key to ensuring timely deployments and uptake, which will depend in turn on coordination with regulators and policymakers across multiple domains. We can learn from 5G – such as the crucial role of potential client industries in identifying demand and possible business cases – but there’s more to be done.
So what do we need to do to get beyond the hype and be ready to deliver practical, effective solutions from day one?
At 6GSymposium Fall 2023 we delved into the critical issues across policy, business and tech with more than 60 experts and showcased demonstrations from cutting-edge research. Now you too can access all that material.
As the ITU defines 6G vision, usage scenarios and requirements more clearly, work begins to develop the wide variety of technology enablers. Beyond technical challenges, we must also build clarity around how to commercialise the new capabilities. The telecoms sector needs confidence that investment will be profitable – not more hype!
At 6GSymposium Spring 2023 we will bring together the international community to build consensus on key issues and further the momentum towards 6G. Join us for essential debates, updates and technical demonstrations moving beyond hype to concrete action and strategies.
Most visions for the world beyond 5G tend to focus on high-level social demands or technology KPIs, but now is the time to move past the vision stage and start making it a reality.
What does that mean for how we live, work and experience the world? Which tech, business and policy approaches will help North America take a global lead?
No one knows how all the pieces will fit together by 2030, but we can start connecting the dots to get a better sense of which pieces are missing.
6GSymposium Fall 2022 brings together thought leaders and innovators from a range of backgrounds including industry, government and academia, to ‘show and tell’ what’s on the horizon, why it matters for North America and what the next steps are.
2022 will see clearer definitions for what comes after 5G from international organisations such as the ITU and 3GPP, while countries across the world are developing their initiatives and research programmes. Visions are giving way to practical solutions and challenges.
It is evident that 6G will contain elements that are a natural extension of 5G and 5G-Advanced, and will in some ways build on the business disruptions already being felt today. At the same time, the unique social and environmental demands being placed on future telecoms will accelerate and redirect innovation, technical and business growth across the telecoms supply chain to create some radical results.
None of this happens in a vacuum. Changes in the telecoms sphere overlap with developments in computing, media, semiconductors, infrastructure and more.
Following the success of last year’s 6GSymposium, we bring you fresh ideas and inspiration from the leading thinkers in industry, government and academia. The event will help anyone aiming to understand their way forward in 2022 and position their organisations for success.
