NI Expert: Software-Defined Radio and 6G Will Work Together

Software-Defined Radio (SDR) and 6G will work together. That is one of many takeaways of the catch-up 6GWorld had with Ben Coffin, Chief Global Business Manager, Wireless Research at National Instruments (NI), during the 6GSymposium Fall 2024.

In this interview, Coffin talks about his work at NI, about SDR and its intersection with 6G. “We have a fantastic R&D facility in Dresden, Germany. Those guys have been spending a lot of time over the past few years delving into what’s needed for the wireless communication space as these new 6G technologies get set up,” he explained.

According to the expert, researchers are investigating what tools are needed to characterize a radar signal and a communications signal simultaneously, for example.

“The software-defined radio is a great multi-waveform, sort of multi-physical layer platform,” Coffin said. “And being able to prototype those technologies with software-defined radio is really how you validate and prove that these technologies are gonna be useful,” Coffin said.
