Colt, Honeywell, and Nokia Launch Space-Based Quantum-Safe Cryptography Trial

Colt Technology Services, Honeywell, and Nokia have announced a collaborative trial to explore quantum-safe networking using satellite communications. This initiative aims to test new methods of protecting encrypted optical network traffic from potential threats posed by quantum computing, which could compromise traditional encryption methods.

The trial focuses on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a technique that securely shares encryption keys between two parties. While terrestrial QKD is limited to approximately 100 kilometers due to physical constraints, utilizing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites can potentially overcome this limitation, enabling ultra-long-distance and transatlantic secure communications.

This collaboration underscores the importance of developing quantum-safe networks to protect sensitive data against future quantum computing threats. By leveraging space-based QKD, the partners aim to enhance the security of communications for sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government.
