Industrial uses of 5G and beyond create a wide variety of very different demands beyond the media browsing and internet usage typical of consumers. In particular, machine-to-machine communications can require not only low-latency communications but also very specific-latencies to allow for closely coordinated processes such as collaborative robots, while multi-sensory experiences may demand closely-timed inputs and outputs.
3GPP’s Release 16 goes a good way towards this with developments in Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), while Release 17 uses accurate timing to assist with more accurate positioning. Is that enough to support the different demands today and tomorrow, especially where we move beyond the factory environment, or will something more need to be an ingredient on the road to 6G?
