SNS JU Launches €104M Call to Advance 6G Research and Innovation in Europe

The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has launched its fourth call for proposals, with €104 million in funding to strengthen Europe’s 6G leadership across technology, sustainability, and standards.

On April 14, 2025, the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) officially launched its 2025 call for proposals, opening a new chapter in Europe’s push toward 6G development. Backed by €104 million in EU funding, this is the fourth major call by the SNS JU, following 80 projects already funded in earlier phases.

The call will open for submissions on May 22, 2025, with a deadline set for September 18, 2025. This initiative is part of the broader SNS JU Work Programme 2025, which aims to support 6G-related research, pre-standardization, and experimental platforms that align with Europe’s vision for sustainable, secure, and inclusive digital infrastructure.

“This Work Programme represents a crucial step in Europe’s journey towards 6G leadership. By bringing together European vertical industries, academia, and research institutions, we’re not just developing technology – we’re building Europe’s digital future with a focus on sustainability, security, and societal impact,” said Erzsébet Fitori, Executive Director of the SNS JU.

The Work Programme introduces several targeted streams, each aligned with key 6G priorities:

  • Stream B – Advanced Research: Focused on both evolutionary and disruptive technology innovations for 6G systems.
  • Stream C – SNS System Enablers and Experimental Infrastructures: Enabling the Telco-Edge-Cloud convergence and strengthening Europe’s experimental 6G infrastructure.
  • Strong emphasis on sustainability and Key Value Indicators (KVIs) to guide the development of environmentally responsible and socially relevant networks.
  • Continued investment in standardization, AI-driven networking, security and trust, and the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

To support stakeholders, the SNS JU will host an Information Day and brokerage event on May 23, 2025, aimed at helping potential applicants form partnerships and better understand the goals and structure of the 2025 call.

Why it matters:
With 3GPP set to begin its 6G study phase in mid-2025, this funding initiative comes at a pivotal moment. It signals Europe’s intention to lead not only in technological innovation but also in shaping the values and standards behind next-generation connectivity. The inclusion of sustainability, trust, and interoperability as core pillars reflects a broader ambition to ensure that 6G serves strategic and societal needs—not just performance targets.
