Iridium & Syniverse Team Up on Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity

Iridium Satellite Network

A quietly important development just landed in the growing convergence between terrestrial and satellite networks. Iridium and Syniverse have announced a global partnership to enable direct-to-device (D2D) satellite services for mobile network operators (MNOs), integrating Iridium’s upcoming Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) Direct service with Syniverse’s roaming and interconnect infrastructure.

Why It Matters:

  • Real integration, not vaporware: This isn’t about launching yet another constellation or hypothetical coverage. Instead, Iridium will tap its existing LEO network and bring it into the 3GPP standards fold (Release 19), while Syniverse handles the glue—roaming, authentication, and billing—so MNOs don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
  • Global coverage, everyday use: The vision is to offer MNOs a way to fill rural and remote gaps without major capex. Think messaging, NB-IoT and emergency services—integrated, not bolted on.
  • Market timing: With Release 19 due by the end of 2025 and Iridium devices expected in 2026, this isn’t immediate, but it’s more than a science project. According to GSMA’s latest data, 85% of MNOs evaluating NTNs want LEO-based solutions. Iridium and Syniverse are betting they’ll be ready to meet that demand with practical D2D services.

The Bigger Picture:

This partnership reflects a shift in mindset—from satellite as a last resort, to satellite as a seamless extension of mobile networks. It’s a practical example of how D2D can move from demos and press releases to real-world implementation, without throwing out the existing telecom playbook.

For mobile execs, it’s a space to watch—not because it’s flashy, but because it quietly solves a growing operational challenge: ubiquitous coverage without breaking infrastructure models.
